Peru, Lima: Brazil's Companhia de Bebidas das Americas SA has started work on a $40 million brewery south of Lima after various delays, a company spokesman said Wednesday, October 6, according to Dow Jones. "What we have are some permits that allow us to start work, such as building the wall around the 14.5-hectare perimeter," the spokesman said. AmBev has also started putting in water, sewer systems and electricity.

A series of other permits are still to be granted but "everything is in process and we hope that they will be granted soon," the spokesman added. Once paperwork is in place it will take "several months" to build the brewery, according to the spokesman. Land disputes in the area have delayed the company's entry into the Peruvian market. The brewery was originally to be up and running by the middle of this year. According to company officials, they have had to resolve dozens of legal disputes that impeded the building of the brewery.

Union de Cervecerias Peruanas Backus & Johnston SAA, or Backus, controlled by Colombia's Bavaria SA, has a monopoly on beer production in Peru.
Ambev's entry into Peru's soft drinks market has been smoother.
