Germany: Number of breweries jumps to 1,492

The trend for craft beers saw the number of breweries in Germany jump by 82 in 2017, the same as in the previous eight years combined, according to the German Brewers Association (DBB).

Germany is now home to 1,492 breweries, more than ever since the country reunified in 1990.

"The beer market in Germany is getting more varied despite a consolidation," Holger Eichele, DBB director, told dpa.

The growth in breweries number has been attributed to the growing popularity of smaller, specialised microbreweries which offer craft beers, despite overall beer consumption declining.
