Malting news Australia: Coopers Brewery launches its 54 thousand tonnes malting plant in Adelaide

The maker of one of Australia’s most iconic beer brands, Coopers Brewery, officially opened a new, AUD$65 million (about $49 million) malting plant in Adelaide on November 30, reportedly the firm’s biggest investment in its more than 150 years of operation, the Powder Bulk Solids reported.

Featuring a planned annual capacity of 54,000 tonnes of malt, the beer maker plans to use 17,000 tonnes/yr for its own production needs and sell the remainder to other domestic and foreign firms, Coopers managing director Tim Cooper said in a company press release.

“Some of the innovations we have incorporated include full stainless-steel construction, enclosed conveyors, together with advanced process control and monitoring,” Cooper said in Adelaide Now’s piece. “In terms of water usage, process control and automation, this is the most advanced maltings in the world.”

Some equipment for the 13,000-sq-m plant was sourced from the Swiss firm Buhler Group, a provider of malting and milling technology. The Aherns Group, a construction firm, assembled 25 barley, malt, and processing silos, three 60-tn steeping vessels, and a kiln vessel at the site.
