EU: Malting barley prices up quite significantly this week
The market seems to realize that quality malting barley supply is tighter than in the last years, GrainCom analysts said in their report on September 22.
There are problems which will probably be solved via the price and/or premiums and allowances, the analysts said.
The UK is really struggling with its crop for now, selling interest is very low. France looks mixed (there are also protein issues), and in Scandinavia it seems that the very optimistic outlook from 2-3 weeks ago maybe was a bit too optimistic (skinned kernels? pre-germination?).
Some business has been done lately, certainly there is still more to come. Stocks are low, malt offtake is good and quality supply is tight. There is no magic behind the price increase, GrainCom said.
