Barley news EU: Malting barley prices slightly down, big picture still unchanged

EU malting barley prices went slightly down during the week of August 7, GrainCom reported on August 11.

Buying interest was not as big as the week before. However the big picture did not change, the analysts said.

Harvest in Germany remains difficult, it was raining again and it is clear that this weather does not help at all. In the UK, the harvest advanced in the last days as it has been dry. The results so far are mixed with reported quality and quantity certainly below expectations / hopes. We would estimate around 40% of the harvest to be cut, GrainCom said. It’s certainly too early to write it all off, but bottom line is that the malting barley harvest in Europe is rather getting smaller than bigger.

Scandinavian harvest may get into full swing next week, but of course if weather permits that, and the weather forecast does not really look like it’s drying up.
