Russia & Ukraine: Russia and Ukraine forecast to see barley area and production decline this year
UkrAgroConsult updated their 2017/18 Russian and Ukrainian barley balances and now expects acreage and production decreases in both countries, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported on June 2.
Russia is expected to harvest 17.2 mln tonnes of barley from 8.3 mln ha this year (compared to 18 mln tonnes and 8.675 mln ha last year), while Ukraines production is expected to drop to 7.9 mln tonnes and area to 2.53 mln ha (9.45 mln tonnes and 2.905 mln ha, respectively).
Domestic consumption is forecast at 14.1 mln tonnes in Russia (up from 13.8 mln tonnes last year) and 4.09 mln tonnes in Ukraine (4.01 mln).
Barley exports forecast is up for Russia (to 4.5 mln tonnes this year from 2.8 mln in 2016) and significantly smaller for Ukraine 3.9 mln tonnes in 2017 vs. 5.2 mln last year.
