EU: Barley crop 2017 still forecast at around 60 mln tonnes
After a mild winter with negligible losses, spring came early in almost all of Europe, spring planting was virtually finished in February/March in most countries on the continent, and well advanced in the U.K., H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest monthly report.
In most countries it was too dry in winter and spring. By mid-April winter returned with frost and some precipitation, still insufficient in large parts of France and Southwest Germany.
According to the analysts, in Turkey, Spain and North Africa we must count on smaller crops. In France, South Germany and England dryness may reduce yields, and all over Europe the cold is delaying planting and vegetation. Nevertheless all analysts still forecast this years EU barley crop at around 60 mln tonnes.
