Brewing news The Czech Republic: Beer output up 1.9% last year

Czech brewers produced a record amount of beer last year - 20.5 mln hl which is 1.9% more than in 215, České Noviny reported.

Total beer consumption in the country amounted to 16.4 mln hl, up 0.2 mln hl as compared to the previous year. The nation’s Beer and Malt Association explained the increase in beer consumption by an increased population (+25 thousand yoy). Per capita beer consumption remained unchanged at 143 litres.

According to industry sources, production of zero-alcohol beer increased by 17.7% last year whereas the output of beer mixes and beer cocktails declined by 17.3%.

Export increased by 4.5% to 4.4 mln hl with main buyers of Czech beer having been Slovakia, Germany, and Poland. Overall export to other EU nations, however, dropped by 2.5%.

Beer import increased by 4.6% to 0.32 mln hl with the majority of import coming from Poland.

The nation’s malt output totalled 544 thousand tonnes, down 0.7% yoy. Export grew 9.5% to 267.7 thousand tonnes. The Czech Republic exports malt to 51 countries worldwide with main destinations being Poland and Germany. Czech maltsters increased shipments to Poland, Austria, and Cuba and reduced to Slovenia and Brazil. New export destinations for Czech malt last year were Thailand and Mexico.
