EU: Malting barley market remains rather quiet

The EU market was rather quiet this week with very limited activity in the malting barley market. Some export business for higher quality/ higher protein barley took place for shipment during the next 6 weeks, Graincom reported.

Weather remains rather wet and cold in Northern Europe, and just cold in Central Europe. Farmers in France, the UK and Spain would be happy to get some rains next week, as some dry spots are still prevailing. Overall the Graincom analysts consider the crop conditions in Europe as favourable, and at this point in time they continue to work with average yield potentials.

Seeding in Scandinavia made a big jump in the last 10 days, the region should be close to 80% done. Lack of farmer selling remains the main theme, industry sources report.

Strategie Grain came out with their latest EU barley crop estimate at 61.3 mln tonnes, Graincom are at 60.8 mln tonnes.
