Barley news South America: Argentina and Uruguay forecast to be able to cover the continent’s malting barley needs

South America’s total malting barley surplus is seen at 952,450 tonnes this year, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month citing data from BMS Montevideo.

Argentina and Uruguay together could have a surplus of 1.925 mln tonnes of malting barley, which would cover the total deficit of 972,550 tonnes in Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, the analyst said.

Argentina’s barley output is forecast at 3 mln tonnes this year, with malting barley selection at 90%.

Uruguay is expected to produce a total of 650,000 tonnes of barley, of which 90% of malting grade.

Both Chile and Brazil are expected to report good malting barley crops this year (in Chile, 100% of the crop to be of malting quality), but the two countries are still expected to require imports.
