Anticipated 2017 acreage will drop from 6.39 mln to 5.88 mln acres.
After last years frightening summer weather it was a great surprise that western farmers collected 1.9 mln tonnes of malting barley. Domestic demand is 1.0 mln tonnes. In July-Jan Canada shipped 350,000 tonnes of malting barley to China, but export sales came to an end towards the end of the year.
Reports are that malting barley market prices in Saskatchewan dropped from C$ 250,- to 180,- per tonne (feed barley is 135,-).
