World: Malt trade forecast to decline in 2016/17
The IGC forecasts a total 2016/17 world trade of 7.065 mln tonnes of malt (grain equivalent), down from 7.210 a year ago, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their February report.
The forecast includes South America, down from 1.541 to 1.150 mln tonnes, due to new local malting factories, but also the Venezuelan crisis. On the upside there are Korea and Vietnam in Asia, as well as the whole of Africa.
IGC statistics also show that malt shipments of the five major malt exporters of the world in July/Nov 2016 were down from 2.593 to 2.459 mln tonnes (grain equivalent). What is worse, the new TAXUD statistics show EU exports (malt value) down in July 16/24 Jan 17 from 1.448 to 1.265 mln tonnes. Private sources, however, do not agree with this figure, the analysts reported.
