EU: Barley production forecast to increase to 56.121 mln tonnes in 2020/21
EU Commissions report of 25 June puts the EU-27 barley output estimate at 55.111 mln tonnes in 2019/20 and forecasts it to increase to 56.121 mln tonnes in 2020/21.
Barley imports are seen at 2 mln tonnes in 2019/20 and 1.377 mln in 2020/21.
Exports are forecast at 10.1 mln tonnes and 10.8 mln tonnes, respectively (both figures include malt in grain equivalent). From July 1, 2019 till June 21, 2020 the EU-28 exported 7.075 mln tonnes of barley, 64% more than a year ago. Major suppliers were France with 3.23 mln tonnes, Germany 1.33 mln, Romania 1.05 mln, and the 3 Baltic States with 0.55 mln tonnes. 400 thousand tonnes originated from the U.K. Major destinations were: Saudi Arabia 2.68 mln tonnes, China 1.13 mln tonnes, and and Morocco 0.87 mln tonnnes.
The EU-27 barley consumption is forecast to remain almost unchanged 43.622 mln tonnes in 20219/20 and 43.71 mln tonnes in 2020/21. Ending stocks are seen at 6.586 and 9.574 mln tonnes, respectively.
