Barley news Denmark: Scandinavian barley production difficult to predict

Weather continues to be mild after record high temps. September, October and November. Winter crops are progressing well but a sudden real winter could change things as well. With winter crops well advanced a spell of frost without snow cover could this year have disastrous effects. Consequently Scandinavian participation in the EU spring barley production is more difficult to predict than for several years, mentioned H. Abildstrom&Co. ApS in his 13th November report.

Prices all aver EU showed a hardly ever seen steep rise practically unbroken from 15th August. Old crop prices in fact are still very firm in France, Germany England and obviously in Scandinavian countries. Turnover, however, lost speed after the BRAU Nurnberg in November. New crop especially lost wind and has recently lost 3-10 Euros dependent on market.

Trade out of Denmark is momentarily almost non-existent, but any inquiry will still be met with the high levels mentioned below irrespective of 1st or 2nd hand offerings. For the first time though, there seems to appear some farmer interest to sell. They are asking exorbitant prices but if their burley is found in order, especially goods bellow 11,5%, the merchants are paying up. The Danish malsters – though – have set their own limits to prices and stay away if cannot conclude at these.

New crop – as mentioned – is backing a little, mainly because the amount of sellers exceeded buying interest as from 1st December. Malsters apparently – for the first time in years – might have a better margin for crop 2007/08 deliveries and have been willing to take cover for October – December at the levels offered.
