The present world supply and demand of malting barley looks desperately short. Prices will remain at very high levels throughout the year, experts estimated October 02. Purchase patterns must change, low quality and feed barleys will replace regular malting barley.

China and Russia must use a maximum of their local crops.

Main barley exporter include Australia (0.6 million t), Canada (1.2 million t), EU25 winter and spring varieties (02 million t), Mercosur (0.1 million t). Total exports: 2.1 million t.

Main barley importers include: China (1.7 million t), other Asian countries (0.3 million t), USA (0.5 million t), Russia (0.1 million t), South America (outside Mercosur, 0.3 million t), Turkey/Mediterranean (0.1 million t), South Africa (0.1 million t). Total imports: 3.1 million t. Barley deficit is therefore estimated to reach 1.0 million t.
