Brewing news Russia: Efes Breweries International boosted beer sales by 40% in 1H 2006

Efes Breweries International increased beer sales in Russia 40% year-on-year to 4 million hectoliters in the first half of 2006, the company said in a release, Interfax News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge announced August 09.

These figures include the results of Krasny Vostok, which Efes bought in February 2006. Not including Krasny Vostok, Efes sales in Russia grew 12% year-on-year to 3.1 million hectoliters in January-June 2006.

The company doubled production capacity at its Ufa brewery to 4 million hectoliters per year in the first half of 2006. Following the upgrade, the company's overall production capacity in Russia amounted to 19.7 million hectoliters at the end of June.

Efes beer sales in Kazakhstan increased 28% year-on-year to 0.4 million hectoliters in the half, while sales of beer and non-alcoholic beverages in Moldova grew 7% to 0.5 million hectoliters, including an 18% rise in beer sales.

Total sales, including Krasny Vostok, amounted to 5.5 million hectoliters in the first half of 2006, up 33% year-on-year, the company said. Not including Krasny Vostok, sales grew 14% to 4.7 million hectoliters.

Efes Breweries International N.V. and Anadolu Efes Biracilik ve Malt Sanayi A.S. acquired a 92.34% stake in Krasny Vostok from Airat and Ilshat Khairullin for $364 million. Krasny Vostok currently owns two breweries in Kazan and Novosibirsk with aggregate production capacity of 10 million hectoliters of beer per year. Efes currently has three breweries in Russia - in Moscow, Rostov-on-Don and Ufa - in addition to a malt house in Moscow.

Efes increased beer sales in Russia 16% to 5.9 million hectoliters in 2005. Russia accounted for 66% of total Efes sales.
