Brewing news Germany: Warsteiner called favourite brand by Germans according to a TNS Emnid survey

Beer continues to be the Germans’ favourite drink. According to a study conducted by the opinion research institute TNS Emnid for German Beer Day, 5% of all Germans aged 14+ enjoy a beer every day – in other words about 3.5 million people. Nearly 30% (approx. 6 million) have a beer at least once a week and 65% – the vast majority – are generally fond of the amber nectar, Warsteiner Brauerei (Warsteiner Brewery) recently released.

The Germans’ favourite brand is called Warsteiner. In terms of taste, awareness and quality, Warsteiner received the best ratings, followed by three other beer brands: Krombacher, Bitburger and Beck’s (with regard to quality and taste). As far as awareness was concerned, Warsteiner was followed by Bitburger, Krombacher, Beck’s, Paulaner, Erdinger and Radeberger. In matters of regional identification, however (i.e. the degree to which the brand supports regional customs and social interaction), the top position is held by Erdinger, followed by Paulaner, Krombacher and Warsteiner. This is an area where nothing beats Bavarian traditions.

Where attitudes among Germans are concerned, the pattern is virtually the same in east and west, where beer is equally popular. Interestingly, the most frequent consumers of beer are not Bavarians (7% daily) but the populations of Saxony (9% daily) and Thuringia (11% several times a week). The largest group of teetotallers, who never drink any beer at all (at 44%), on the other hand, can be found in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. At the same time, the survey showed one thing very clearly: beer continues to be a man’s drink. Nearly every other German male has a beer at least once a week, but only 13% of women.

The TNS Emnid survey took the form of telephone interviews between March 20 and 25, 2006, and comprised a total of 3,022 persons, including 883, who drank beer at least once a week.

Founded in 1753, the Warsteiner Brewery is one of Germany’s largest private breweries. Its flagship is the Warsteiner Premium Verum brand, which is one of the most popular beers across Germany. In addition, the product portfolio includes the beer mixes Warsteiner Lemon, Cola and Orange, as well as the reduced-calorie HiLight beer.

Apart from the Warsteiner Brewery, the Haus Cramer Group also owns Paderborner Brauerei Haus Cramer KG (Paderborner, Isenbeck, Weissenburger) and Casa Isenbeck in Argentina, as well as interests in König Ludwig GmbH & Co. KG, Schlossbrauerei Kaltenberg (König Ludwig Dunkel, Prinzregent Luitpold Weissbier) and the Frankenheim Brewery (Frankenheim Alt, Frankenheim blue, Frankenheim lemon) in Düsseldorf, and breweries in Cameroon, Gambia and Nigeria.
