Brewing news Uganda: Nile Breweries is the Best Employer

Nile Breweries scooped on April 3 the Employer of the Year Award 2005 for the second year running, edging out 19 contenders for the gold accolade. The silver and bronze awards were won by dfcu Bank and Kasese Cobalt Company respectively.

Ernst & Young conducted the exercise of the awards, which have increasingly become popular with employers. The annual awards launched in 2001, are organised by the Federation of Uganda Employers (FUE), to promote best human resource practices at workplaces.

Aloysius Ssemmanda, the FUE chairman, said during the awards ceremony at the Sheraton Kampala Hotel that it was only through improvement of human resource practices that best performance could be achieved in any organisation.

"The human resource function is core and instrumental to the development of any organisation. That is why we came up with these awards. Most successful organisations are those that have good human resource functions," Ssemmanda said.

Helge Kristoffersen from the Norwegian embassy officiated at the function.

Ernst & Young's Amos Bagumire said the survey required organisations to fill questionnaires, which were evaluated to realise the welfare of employees and their relationship with employers.

"We carried out surveys on occupational health, safety of employees and the relationship between employees and employers. "We are glad the number has grown to include government institutions. "Up to 60 organisations participated but only 20 won awards," Bagumire said.

The awards were sponsored by the National Social Security Fund, Posta Uganda, Nile Breweries, Coca-Cola and the Sheraton Kampala Hotel.
