Barley news Russia: A further decline in barley exports shipments is forecast

From July 2005 to February 2006, Russia exported about 1.3 million metric tonnes of barley, which exceeded the Russian barley exports in 2004/05 season (1.08 million metric tonnes).

A domestic price growth and aggravating difficulties with formation of export parcels due to dropping supplies, especially in southern regions, are resulting in a further decline in exports shipments. Preliminary estimation of the March – June 2006 barley export is at 150-200 thousand metric tonnes.

Russia registered a low barley harvest in 2005: 16 million metric tonnes compared to 17.2 million metric tonnes in 2004. The low harvest last year in combination with high export demand will result according to UkrAgroConsult, in low supply and low carry over barley stocks in the end of 2005/06. The ending stocks are estimated at around 1 million metric tonnes, which is twice as low as the last season's number.
