Barley news Canada: Malt barley quality payment program gains new partner, CWB said

Louis Dreyfus is the latest grain industry partner to join the CWB's malting barley protein payment program, CWB commented in its publication for barley growers “Go Malting!” for January 2006.

The payment program has been made available to all grain handling agents and malting companies for the 2005-06 crop year. The program began August 18, 2005 and offers protein premiums to farmers for deliveries of two-row malting barley to elevators and maltsters in the 2005-06 crop year.

Canadian malting companies are already participating in the program for all their own selections and direct deliveries. A number of inland terminals are also participating.

Louis Dreyfus joined effective December 15, 2005. Growers delivering to non-participating elevators are encouraged to discuss with their selector and local elevator.

To date the CWB has paid out C$273, 265 in protein payments to farmers who qualified. Premiums range from C$5.40 per tonne for protein levels of 10.9 per cent and lower to C$0.60 per tonne for barley with 12.5 per cent protein.

The payments reflect the relative value of these protein levels to brewers and maltsters and reward crop management practices that result in a crop that closely matches the needs of these customers.

Protein levels are one important indicator of malting characteristics. Levels that are too high or low can affect malting and brewing quality.

Present program participants include Louis Dreyfus, Canada Malting Co., Prairie Malt Ltd.,. Delmar Commodities, Seed-Ex Inc., Fill-More Seeds Inc., Rahr Malting Canada, Inc., Gambrinus Malting Corp., Westlock Terminals, Great Northern Grain Terminals Ltd., Westmore Terminals, and Mid-Sask Terminal Ltd.
