Finland: Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry makes donation to Hospital for Children and Adolescents in Helsinki

This Christmas the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry is donating 10,000 euros for the decoration of the walls of Ward K10 of the Helsinki Hospital for Children and Adolescents with colourful murals. The three treatment rooms of the children’s cancer ward will be painted with pictures to cheer up the little patients. Decorative artists Viviann Seege and Anissa Halim will carry out the project this coming spring. Soft drinks will also be delivered to the ward in time for Christmas, Sinebrychoff brewing announced on December 19.

The Brewing Federation’s Christmas donation will pay for three rooms on the ward to be painted with different fairytale figures. The decorative artists Anissa Halim and Viviann Seege have already previously painted some of the other rooms on the ward, and patients and staff have given very positive feedback on the most spectacular and colourful murals. Charge Nurse Kirsi-Marja Lähteenoja came up with the idea of adding to the existing collection of murals. ”Both adults and children are enchanted by the warm colours and charming details in the paintings”, she tells us. ”The children attend the outpatients’ clinic for tests in between courses of cancer treatment. The dull rooms will soon take on a new sunny aspect.” The murals will be designed and executed in the spring. They will continue the enchanted theme of the existing murals.

The Brewing Federation will also supply the ward with soft drinks for the children and care staff for the Christmas season. ”These murals will give children joy for years to come,” says Timo Jaatinen, Managing Director of the Federation of the Brewing and Soft Drinks Industry. ”The soft drinks, on the other hand, will bring Christmas cheer specifically for this festive season.”

Annually, 130-150 children and adolescents develop cancer, and about one third of that number receives treatment in Ward K10. The Hospital for Children and Adolescents in Helsinki is the principal central treatment unit for bone cancer nationally, and Ward K10 specialises in cancer and diseases of the blood. The unit accommodates 13 inpatient beds, eight intensive care beds and six day-hospital beds. The ward provides about 5,500 treatment days and caters for an average of 5,500 outpatient visits annually.
