Barley news Austraila: Pool feed price increases in SA & East coast

ABB Grain Ltd announced on December 2 that it has increased its gross barley pool indicator for feed barley by $5/tonne in South Australia, Victoria and the east coast.

Managing director, Michael Iwaniw, said the adjustment, which takes feed barley to $165/t (or $170/t for those growers who contracted to the Victorian No.1 pool which closed on October 31) was based on increased pool sales.

“We have had increased feed barley sales for export and this has enabled us to again adjust the pool indicator price upward,” Mr Iwaniw said.

Mr Iwaniw said ABB’s continuing goal in operating its legislated barley pool was to maximise returns to growers, the majority of whom are also shareholders, and to ensure increased transparency and accountability in its operation.

“That’s why in SA, in conjunction with the SA Farmers’ Federation Grains Council, we have completed our first pool performance report, why we have recently established an SA Barley Single Desk Transparency Committee and why we have appointed an independent auditor (Ernst & Young) to examine details of the single desk’s operations,” he said.

“The role of the transparency committee, as a result of the auditor’s reports, will be to determine the integrity of the systems put in place by ABB Grain Export Ltd, in managing the SA barley single desk.”

The gross barley pool indicator price for malt barley remains unchanged at $195/t for SA and the east coast, and in Victoria $200/t for malt barley No.1 pool (which closed on October 31).

A $5/t premium for Baudin and Sloop malting varieties also applies. This is the last season in which the premium will apply.
