UK: The launch of a new yielding spring malting barley to give growers more variety choice
The launching of a new high yielding spring malting barley variety will give growers more variety choice in the next year, according to Farmers weekly.
NFC Tipple is the highest yielding spring malting barley on the 2005/06 Home Grown Cereals Authority Recommended List and already has provisional approval one for brewing by the Institute of Brewing (IOB), the firm said.
The varietys treated yield of 109% of control is 10% above Optic and it also offers good all round disease resistance, plus stiff straw (rated nine for lodging resistance), said the firms Robert Hiles.
At field level, yield on the HGCA Recommended List 2005/06 exceeds all other key varieties with full IOB brewing approval in all regions. But probably most important, it is an inherently low grain nitrogen producer. That can make it easier for growers to achieve required malting specifications.
NFC Tipple has already provisional grade A classification for malting quality in France and is undergoing commercial malting testing in Germany, Denmark and Sweden, he said.It is hoped that full IOB approval for UK brewing will be gained during 2006.
With its high yield, a balanced quality profile and progress in UK and European tests, NFC Tipple potentially widens marketing opportunities for growers, he stated.
