Barley news Australia: ABB Grain announces first harvest advance in South Australia

ABB Grain Ltd announced on November 10 its first pool barley advance figures for the 2005/2006 harvest. Approved advances for the No.1 pool in South Australia are A$132/tonne for malting barley and A$123/t for feed barley.

ABB Grain’s general manager marketing, Nigel Officer, said the narrow differential between malt and feed barley was due to strong demand for feed. “We have had a very good start for our feed program and all sales to date are for early shipment,” Mr Officer said.

“Malting barley has shown limited demand right now and, while we expect to make good sales in the future, buyers are not showing their hand at the moment. There is much more certainty on feed at the moment and that is reflected in the prices.”

Harvest advances for pool barley are paid to growers in most circumstances within eight days of their delivering grain to ABB.

Current gross barley pool indicators for the 2005/2006 season are A$190/tonne for Malting Barley and A$155/t for Feed Barley. There is also a A$5/t premium for Sloop malting barley but this would be the last season the premium is being paid.

ABB has also recently established Feed 2 and Feed 3 barley pool segregations with Feed 2 currently having an indicative price of A$150/t and Feed 3, A$140/t.

In September, ABB also announced sliding scale adjustments for the 2005/2006 season malting barley pool, enabling growers delivering Malting 3 quality barley in SA only to benefit from better returns.

The scale will benefit growers who deliver either Schooner or Sloop varieties of barley, but who just miss out on their grain being graded Malt 1.
