Brewing news Sri Lanka: Lion Brewery develops pet food based on spent beer yeasts

The Lion Brewery Ltd (CBL), as other manufacturers, used to face a huge problem of disposing their waste, specially the waste water sludge which is known as spent yeast a by-product of the brewery, Asian Tribune reported on September 11. Monthly, the brewery was spending money to dispose several tons of this waste.

Currently CBL has developed an animal feed supplement based on spent yeast, which will save millions of rupees in foreign exchange for importing expensive animal feed supplements for pets. The CBL’s product will be obtainable in power and capsule forms, in different pack sizes and will be distributed by Hector Pietersz & Co Ltd (HPCL).

The HPCL’s Managing Director Hector Pietersz, stated that that his firm purchases the spent yeast from CBL and transforms them into products such as food supplement for animals in powder and capsule form. These could be given to cattle, poultry, pigs, cats and dogs. Several tons of these waste is now turned into organic fertilizer and it too is marketed by HPCL.

The new product launch was held at Otters Club, last week.
