News from e-malt USA: Barley crop conditions are the highest in 13 years, and the second highest in 20 years

Barley crop conditions are the highest in 13 years, and the second highest in 20 years! The excellent crop ratings can be attributed to the swift planting progress made this year. Planting is nearly complete, with USDA reporting 96 % of the U.S. crop is planted, vs. 95 % average. The crop has also shown excellent emergence rates, with USDA pegging the U.S. crop as being 85 % emerged, vs. 78 % average.

Malting barley cash bids increased 5 cents last week to $2.45. Feed barley cash bids have remained steady at $1.70. Cash bids will likely remain steady (or possibly decrease some) due to the excellent crop condition ratings.
