News from e-malt EU: Estimations and forecasts of EU barley crop 2005

The EU barley crop of 2005 is estimated at 56.1 million tonnes by the IGC, but at 54.25 million tonnes by the USDA. If the lower predictions turn out right, the total EU crop would be 7.5 million tonnes lower than last year.

Last month the Spanish crop was estimated at 8.8 million tonnes, the Spanish Ministry now predicts 7.95 million tonnes and pessimistic private estimates are 6.0 million tonnes. The ministry believes that the total Spanish grain crop may be halved, and has requested a transfer of 6-8 million tonnes of EU grains to the country, transport cost for Brussel’s account. The request has not been granted yet.

Portugal had also requested drought-aid and will receive 40,000 tonnes of barley (+ 160,000 tonnes of other grains) from intervention stocks in Hungary or other EU countries.
