Hops news Germany: Hop farmers expecting disruptions due to overproduction and lower alcohol sales

German hop farmers are expecting disruption in the industry due to overproduction and a further decline in Germany's alcohol consumption.

The harvest in 2025 was lower than in the previous year, with 43,141 tonnes of raw hops harvested nationwide, which is 7% less than in 2024, the German Hop Growers' Association reported on December 9.

The area under cultivation declined by 6.5%, to 18,961 hectares, said association president Adi Schapfl. According to the report, 1,326 hectares were cleared and 44 hop farms ceased production.

With around 35% of the world's hop cultivation area, Germany remains the world's largest hop producer, exporting to more than 100 countries.

Producers faced problems this year due to the weather, with the summer being too warm and dry. Heavy rainfall from the end of July onwards was only able to compensate for this in some areas.

Germany's hop farmers expect a fundamental change in the market in the coming years. On the one hand, the association expects prices to fall and a further decline in cultivation areas due to years of full hop stocks at brewers and hop traders, and an oversupply in the market.

The association also sees declining alcohol consumption as a reason for significant changes in the industry. In addition, there is a trend towards less hoppy beers, which is causing demand to fall further, said chairman Pascal Piroué.

"The consequences for the hop industry are serious," said Piroué.

He believes hop farmers should seize the opportunity to modernize with a focus on climate-resistant, disease-resistant varieties. "Those who adapt in time can emerge from this phase stronger than before," he said.
