Barley news Canada: Barley crop estimate increased for 2024, forecast raised for 2025

For Canada’s barley crop’24, RMI Analytics’ production estimate is tweaked +0.1 mln tonnes to 8.1 mln tonnes; and looking ahead to crop’25 an increase in production to 8.9 mln tonnes is forecast, on expectations for a small increase in planted area and a move back to long-term average yields, the analysts said in their early January report.

In terms of soil moisture conditions across North America, there has been some scattered improvements across key barley regions, but there remains a number of dry regions and the normal reliance upon spring rains remains firmly in place.

Barley exports from Canada are slightly ahead of the crop’23 pace but in general continue to trail the previous five-year average. For China, November shipments from Canada were 160 thousand tonnes (22% of total).
