Brewing news Belgium: Brewery Huyghe acquires fellow Belgian brewer Het Anker

Brewery Huyghe, the maker of Delirium Tremens, has acquired Het Anker, the Belgian brewery behind the Gouden Carolus brand, Belga News Agency reported on December 26.

Het Anker, also known for Maneblusser, La Cambre and Boscoli, was put up for sale in October by director Charles Leclef, who sought a buyer after failing to find a family successor.

On December 26, Huyghe, owned by Alain De Laet, confirmed the purchase of Het Anker. With this acquisition, Huyghe expands its portfolio, which already includes Delirium Tremens, Averbode, St-Idesbald, and La Guillotine, and strengthens its position in both domestic and international markets.

Huyghe produced 250,000 hectolitres of beer in the past year, generating 45 million euros in turnover with 100 employees. Het Anker, which brewed 30,000 hectolitres, recorded 21 million euros in turnover and employs 110 people.

Alain De Laet plans to increase the global distribution of Gouden Carolus, bringing it to over 100 countries. De Laet also said he does not want a fusion of the brands: both breweries should maintain their distinct identities.

The acquisition is viewed as a strategic move to enhance both companies’ growth potential, particularly in export markets. While Het Anker has traditionally focused on the domestic market, Huyghe’s strength in international sales (exporting to over 80 countries) paves the way for a broader global presence for Het Anker’s brands, despite the declining Belgian beer market.
