Spain: Intermalta to increase its malting capacity to 450,000 tonnes
Malteurops Spanish subsidiary Intermalta on September 23 announced plans to increase its malting capacity. This expansion aims to satisfy the growing demand of brewers and consumers of malt throughout the Iberian Peninsula.
The company plans to increase its annual production capacity from the current 350,000 tonnes to 450,000 tonnes, in two phases. The first phase of the expansion (+60,000 tonnes for the third quarter of 2026) will involve improvements to the facilities in San Adrián.
Intermalta, founded in 1974, has grown alongside the Spanish beer sector. The company started with a single malthouse that produced 15,000 tonnes annually in 1977 and now operates three production centres in San Adrián, Albacete and Seville.
Carlos Álvarez Fernández, general director of Intermalta, said: "This increase in capacity is a response to the evolution of the needs of our customers in Spain. It will allow us to continue supplying malt produced with barley grown locally by farmers in different areas of Spain."
In addition to the expansion of capacity, Intermalta is implementing measures to reduce its environmental impact. The company aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50% in all facilities in the next five years. This initiative covers the entire production process, from the cultivation of barley to the production of malt.
