Barley news EU & UK: Barley crop conditions improve slightly across Europe

Barley crop conditions in Europe have improved slightly over the past two weeks and RMI Analytics’ latest crop 2024 forecast is increased by 0.4 mln tonnes to 60 mln.

While the crop remains delayed, with France estimated at three weeks behind normal, the current additional rain and warmer temperatures are positive for crop development. French “good/very good” crop ratings are 66% for winter barely (90% last year) and 72% for spring (94%).

Breaks in rain have allowed planting to proceed (although late) across most of western Europe. Scotland getting the final area seeded will be very late.

Barley prices are firm, led by a very strong wheat market and despite the improving crop conditions. Feed barley prices are stronger (concerns about crops in Ukraine and Russia), and malting premiums are narrowing as a result.
