Brewing news USA, TX: Three Wide Brewing comes to Fort Worth

A funky new brewpub offering craft beer with a “West coast feel” is about to open in far north Fort Worth. Called Three Wide Brewing, the taproom and restaurant will open at 16230 Three Wide Dr., west of I-35 and north of 114, with an opening set for March 2, Culture Meeting Fort Worth reported on March 1.

The concept was founded in 2020 by engineer-turned-brewmaster Matt Morriss, a Fort Worth native, but the COVID-19 pandemic derailed the company from opening until now.

Many breweries on the West coast focus on a more expansive taproom experience, which Morris wanted to emulate in Fort Worth.

“While we are a fully functioning distribution brewery, it’s much more of a grand experience than what you’ll see at a lot of other brewery taprooms in the area,” he says. “That’s the feeling that we wanted to bring to our Texas beers.”

The space feels like a sports bar, with a large, airy indoor dining area with plenty of screens to watch the games, plus an upstairs loft with additional seating. There’s also an outdoor patio, to test the company’s claim that “beer tastes better outside.”

Three Wide brews its own beer, which it began distributing to local bars and restaurants in January. The brewpub will offer 20 brews on tap, with a focus on IPAs, lagers, and barrel-aged beers, which Morris is excited to introduce to the area.

“We’re going to bring lots of different beers and put them in lots of different barrels,” Morris says. “You won’t see a lot of them from us for about a year or so because of the amount of time it takes to barrel-age, but we’ve already started that process.”

Until then, some brews include

• Sour Molly: a blood orange hibiscus berliner
• Outer Groove: a New England IPA with notes of melon, peach, and pineapple
• Twelve Bar Blues: a milk stout with coffee and marshmallow flavors
• Spunky Brewster: a “juiced up” west coast IPA with prominent citrus and passionfruit aromas
• Call Me Maibock: a malty German lager otherwise known as a spring bock.

The food menu features brewpub staples like burgers, sandwiches, Neapolitan-style pizzas, pretzels, and chicken tenders.

Morris is no stranger to beer or restaurant ownership — before Three Wide Brewing, he co-founded Rabbit Hole Brewing in Justin in 2013. Then he pivoted to the new venture in 2019 when Rabbit Hole closed.

The company’s aesthetic incorporates several abstract, cartoon characters that are emblematic of its mission to be welcoming. The cast includes three-eyed and horned little monsters that could possibly represent anyone.

“The whole fun cast of characters represents our motto that ‘all characters are welcome,’” Morris says. “We want everybody to be comfortable coming in, no matter where you’re from or what your beliefs are, it doesn’t matter. We are always going to be able to make space for all characters.”

Three Wide Brewing will host a grand opening event March 2-3 with live music performances from The Martin Brothers, Brave Combo, Bobby Duncan, and Retrophonics. Hours are Monday-Thursday 11 am-10 pm, Friday-Saturday 11 am-11 pm, and Sunday 11 am-9 pm.
