Barley news EU & UK: Concerns raising about timely planting of 2024 spring barley crop

Crop 2023 barley production at 54.5 mln tonnes, a drop of 4.3 mln tonnes from crop 2022, has tightened the malting barley balance sheet in the region, especially with some quality impacts, RMI Analytics said in their latest report.

Warm temperatures and heavy rain dominate Europe’s weather and continue to raise concerns regarding the timely seeding for crop 2024 spring barley. The situation is not expected to improve in the short term as more rain is forecast. Spring barley planting in France is only 26% completed versus 77% last year.

EU barley prices are down sharply in crop 2023, as liquidity is extremely limited with demand mostly absent. The spread between crop 2023 and crop 2024 is narrowing, partly due to the planting delays holding crop 2024 prices up while crop 2023 is being pressured lower.
