Brewing news Portugal: Beer output, consumption increase in 2022

Last year, Portugal’s per capita beer consumption reached 58 litres, 20% more than in 2021 (48 litres on average), Renascenca reported citing data by the nation’s Brewers’ Association (Cervejeiros de Portugal).

Among other EU members, Portugal is ranked 20th, according to European Beer Trends 2021 report. This shows that in terms of beer consumption the nation is well behind the Northern Europe countries and the UK.

Head of Cervejeiros de Portugal Rui Lopes Ferreira said the sector increased by approximately 20% versus 2021, thanks to increased consumption by tourists and female consumers who are estimated to account for around 40% of the total number of consumers in Portugal.

Portugal’s beer output was up 16% in 2022, totalling 7.787 mln hl, surpassing the volume brewed in pre-Pandemic 2019.

The number of breweries is now more than 100 compared to only 10 in 2012, the association said.
