Barley news Canada: Barley crop forecast slightly up as higher yields offset lower harvested area

RMI Analytics’ latest production estimate for Canada barley is up slightly at 9.95 mln tonnes and is in alignment with StatCan’s recent update.

Higher yields were confirmed and offset a slightly lower harvested barley area for crop 2022.

Canada’s barley exports are tracking at a strong pace, similar to the record year in crop 2020 and the strong crop 2021 shipment pace, despite the drought. Crop 2022 exports are at 3.4 mln tonnes remain feasible.

Barley export prices are unchanged for both malting and feed barley this period. Domestically, feed barley prices are down slightly with farmer selling still low. Cattle feeders still look to US corn which is around CAD10/tonne cheaper than barley. Any feed barley purchases are for spot shipment, industry sources report.
