Barley news North America: Dramatic rebound confirmed in Canada, US barley production this year

RMI Analytics’ Canadian barley production estimate remains at 10.2 mln tonnes, as harvest is progressing.

In the US, the weather has been favourable for good progress and harvest can be considered finished. The results are slightly more variable in terms of both quality and yields. Still, overall, the US result is good but the analysts have lowered the production estimate to 3.54 mln tonnes (from 3.7 mln). Some cases of pre-germination have been reported but minor and manageable.

In Canada, the main part of harvest is underway, with a good weather forecast in place, which should facilitate a big move towards harvest completion. At present, the RMI analysts estimate 1/3 of the crop is harvested and mostly in the southern regions. The next two weeks will determine the final capture of malting barley quality and prospects are good at present.

Dryness concerns and strength in wheat prices are expected to keep Canadian barley crop 2023 in a very competitive situation. In the US, crop 2023 activity is rumoured, keeping prices well-supported. Combining the US and Canadian production from crop 2022, a dramatic rebound is confirmed and final quality of the crop is being determined. In the wake of the crop failure in 2021, the higher demand for a pipeline refill should be quickly fulfilled in September, the analysts believe.

For crop 2022, as harvest heads towards a finish and in light of stable global prices RMI Analytics’ price export estimates are unchanged. On the domestic side, the move lower in prices appears to be stalled at the moment.

Corn prices remain firm and are making imports of corn from the US uncompetitive and feeders will continue to focus on local feed barley which keeps the pressure on maltsters to maintain malting barley competitive.
