Barley news Ukraine: World grain markets hoping for export corridor for Ukrainian grains

Weak world grain markets are mainly based on the hopes for an export corridor for Ukrainian grains through the Black Sea. But the war continues, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in June.

Ukraine had exported 5.6 mln tonnes of barley before the outbreak of the war, 95% of its 2021/22 export potential. Exports in May were 11 thousand tonnes.

Farmers planted 928 thousand ha of spring barley vs. 1.337 mln ha last year. Total grain plantings are 5.83 vs. 7.06 mln ha.

Crop 2022 exports via rail and Danube across the Western borders are forecast to reach 10 - 20% of normal export volumes. At present almost 10,000 railcars are approaching or waiting at border stations, with waiting times up to 40 days (worst case). All neighbour countries help to alleviate border passage and transport to seaports, but the sore point remains the different rail gauge of Ukraine and the need of trans shipment at the border. Without exports via sea the country cannot dispose of all its grain and sunflower stocks.
