Australia: ABB Grain Ltd announced on January 31 it has lifted its 2004/05 South Australian malting 1 barley gross pool indicator by A$10/t to A$210-220/t (A$5/t premium for Sloop and Baudin) for the No.1 pool. ABB Grain Ltd as well mentioned that it has lifted its 2004/05 Victorian malting 1 barley gross pool indicators by A$10/t to A$210-220/t for the No.1 pool and A$208-218/t for the No.2 pool (A$5/t premium for Sloop and Baudin).

ABB managing director Michael Iwaniw said that good sales of malting barley to both Japan and China had enabled ABB to lift its indicator. “The malting barley markets have purchased grain at good prices and if this continues we could see a further upside in the pool returns for growers,” said Mr Iwaniw. “Also influencing malting barley prices is the world shortage of good quality malting barley.”

Mr Iwaniw said that the feed barley pool remained steady, with the gross indicator at A$150-160/t for feed 1 barley (for South Australia) and with feed 1 barley gross indicators at $165-175/t for the No.1 pool and $160-170/t for the No.2 pool (for Victoria).

“Export subsidies continue to be granted by the European Commission for feed barley and these have kept a lid on the export feed prices able to be achieved by marketers.”

The current gross barley pool indicators equate to an estimated delivered Port Adelaide price of A$181-191/t for malting 1 barley and A$123-133/t for feed 1 barley (for South Australia). The new gross malting barley pool indicators equate to estimated delivered Geelong prices of A$182-192/t for the No.1 pool and A$180-190/t for the No.2 pool (for Victoria). The Victorian malting 3 quality barley pools and Gairdner no retention malt pool have also lifted by A$10/t.
