Barley news Australia: Barley crop expected to decline in 2022 from the record level of 13.6 mln tonnes last year

Australia’s barley crop 2021 reached another consecutive record level. However, from 13.6 mln tonnes harvested last year the RMI Analytics experts project a decline to 11.1 mln tonnes in crop 2022.

Export shipments will remain robust, the analysts said in their early March report, as world tightness brings a focus to Australia, and to a degree this situation continues into crop 2022 as the conflict in Ukraine is expected to persist.

Rainfall on the east coast of Australia continues to set up a very good moisture profile, which improves prospects for barley in crop 2022.

Australian barley prices have moved quickly to keep pace with world prices. As the residual supply region for barley, further interest in Australian barley is expected. This interest is in addition to malting barley flowing to North America and the EU. Export terminal capacity is expected to be sold out through Q3 2022.
