EU: With barley crop forecast to decline EU participation in world markets to be lower than in past years
The EU Commissions Barley Supply and Demand Balance report of July 30, 2021 puts the EU-27 barley crop forecast at 54.6 mln tonnes in 2020/21 and 52.649 mln tonnes in 2021/22, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier this month.
Imports are forecast at 1.249 mln tonnes in 2021/22, up from 1 mln in 2020/21.
Barley consumption is expected to be slightly down, at 44.409 mln tonnes versus 44.42 mln in 2020/21.
The EU nation are forecast to export 9.32 mln tonnes of barley (including malt in grain equivalent) in 2021/22 down from 10.5 mln tonnes in 2020/21.
Ending stocks are forecast to increase to 5.219 mln tonnes versus 5.049 mln tonnes in 2020/21.
The EU barley harvest is on a stop and go course, rains and thunderstorms delay combining and create nervousness concerning yields and qualities of the crop. With the Commission forecasting a crop of 52.6 mln tonnes, 2.5 mln less than in 2019, the EU participation in barley world markets will be lower than in past years.
