Brewing news USA, TN: Hampline Brewing Company launching in Memphis on January 31

Memphis is getting a new small-batch, craft brewery.

Hampline Brewing Company opens Saturday, January 31 at 584 Tillman St. in the Binghampton neighborhood, The Commerical Appeal reported.

The brewery is a collaboration between brewer Wes Osier and two of the partners at the Rec Room — Martha Hample and Richard Rhodes.

The 2,500-square-foot brewery gets its name from the Hampline Bike Path, and the brewing facility is in the building just behind the Rec Room.

A state-of-the-art brewing system was installed at the facility. Osier, who previously worked with Urban South and Abita Breweries (New Orleans), Terrapin Beer Co. (Athens, Georgia) and SweetWater Brewery (Atlanta), plans to produce 500 barrels in the brewery’s first year.

“My vision is to bring new beer styles such as New England IPAs and mixed culture sours along with Old World German, Belgian and British styles to Memphis beer lovers,” said Osier.

Hampline is opening with two signature brews both on draft and in cans, and a third on tap only.

New England IPA “Handlebar Haze” and “Memphis Natch” lager, named for the first bear at the Memphis Zoo and inspiration for their logo, will be available by the can or draft starting Saturday. The "Dunk Tank," a brown Oktoberfest dunkel lager, is available on tap only. Hample said a double IPA will be coming out in the next couple weeks and “Tarter Than the Average Bear,” a blackberry gose, will follow shortly thereafter.

The taproom features locally crafted, communal, high-top tables for enjoying beer, light snacks and live sports on the brewery's 49-inch flat-screen TV. There will be additional seating available on the covered outdoor porch and on the lower level where custom picnic tables and a shade trellis reside in the grassy beer garden.

“We’re very excited to open to the public after pivoting from our original business plan in the wake of the pandemic. We initially intended to sell mostly wholesale kegs to bars and restaurants. After carefully assessing the situation we decided to include canning right out of the gate and took extra time over the last several months to be able to offer 16-ounce 'tallboy' cans from our taproom, curbside and via delivery as well as offer our products in select retail establishments,” Rhodes said. “We hope this additional source of procurement will bring our products to many more Memphis beer lovers in safer environments.”

The taproom hours of operation will be 4-10 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 1-10 p.m. Saturday and 1-8 p.m. Sunday.
