Brewing news USA, MA: Cape Ann Brewing to permanently close its Gloucester brewpub

After closing early for the season in November, Cape Ann Brewing has made the decision to permanently shutter its Gloucester brewpub, Boston.com reported on January 19.

In a farewell message laced with sailing references, owner and founder Jeremy Goldberg said goodbye to his 18-year-old company.

“It is with much sadness that I announce the permanent closure of the Cape Ann Brewing Company,” Goldberg wrote Monday. “During the summer of 2002, a casual conversation spawned the — perhaps ill-thought — idea of what would become the Cape Ann Brewing Company. Since that day, we strove to create a brand and a place that would represent ‘the courage and spirit of the North Atlantic Fishing Fleet.’ We are proud of what we’ve created over the past 18 years. During this time we’ve weathered many storms, at times enjoyed smooth seas, and have always been thankful for the stong headwinds that have guided our voyage. Unfortunately, the current climate has proven to be our last sail. (Is that enough sailing cliches?)”

Goldberg gave his thanks to the friendships he’d made throughout the beer community, to his customers, and to his staff.

“May all your future voyages be full of good food, good beer, and good company!” he concluded.

Located in downtown Gloucester, Cape Ann Brewing opened in 2004 with its inaugural Fisherman’s Brew. The Pub at Cape Anne Brewing offered guests a chance to enjoy harbor-side seating while snacking on pulled pork tacos and Jamaican jerk chicken alongside the brewery’s lengthy list of beer.

Fans responded to the news with their own memories.

“This is such sad news,” wrote Mass. Brew Bros. “Your brewpub has always been one of our favorite spots. Thanks so much for all the wonderful memories, food and of course beer! We wish you all the best, cheers!”

“Dang, my go-to spot with friends over the years,” lamented Kyle Fiske. “Thanks so much for all the great memories. There wasn’t anything much better than sitting out on your deck looking over the harbor on a summer evening enjoying a great beer.”

“Such sad news but certainly understandable given the circumstances,” Nora Kay Pelt shared. “We never missed an opportunity to stop by for beer and mussels when in the area or when family from the Midwest were in town. I have found nothing better than your Chili Stout. Best wishes in your future endeavors.”
