EU: Winter barley harvest is almost finished, spring progressing fast
The barley harvest is finished in the Mediterranean regions. The EU winter barley harvest is almost finished except for the very north; spring barley harvest is progressing fast under
favourable warm and dry conditions, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported earlier in August.
The crop will probably exceed last years production of 55.0 mln tonnes, because Spain collected a record quantity, up to 11.5 mln vs. a EU Commission estimate of 9.0 mln tonnes.
Dryness, rains and hail affected EU-crops in spring, MARS estimates the yields of winter barley lower than last year, at 6.7 tonnes/ha, 14% down. Spring barley luckily profited from late rains, but yields are lower as well, at 5.7 tonnes/ha, screenings are good, protein variable in the areas harvested to-date.
