EU: New crop barley exports smaller than last year
As per Taxud, the EU exported 7.6 mln tonnes of barley in 2019/20 vs. 4.6 mln the year before, H. M. Gauger GmbH reported on August 3.
Shipments, or rather Taxud publications started slow in the new crop year with barley exports of 254 thousand tonnes as of July 26, 47% less than at the same time last year. However, port loadings by July 25 in France were already 546 thousand tonnes, of which 513 thousand to China.
Market reports are that France sold 0.9 to 1.0 mln tonnes of new crop barley to China, of which 10 11 cargoes of feed and 4 - 5 cargoes of malting barley.
The export market of feed barley looks promising, especially for France. The USDA expects barley imports into Morocco of 1.2 mln tonnes, Libya 600 thousand tonnes, Tunisia 400
thousand and Algeria 300 thousand tonnes. As Algeria harvested only 1 mln tonnes of barley, half of last years crop, the Gauger analysts expect a much larger demand from that country. Tunisia just issued a purchase tender for 100 thousand tonnes.
