Ukraine: Barley crop forecast cut to 7.64 mln tonnes from 8.16 mln previously
Agriculture consultancy ProAgro has cut its forecast for Ukraine's 2020 wheat harvest to 26.07 million tonnes from 26.65 million a month ago due to poor weather, representing a near 8% fall year-on-year.
"Significant heat in the south, east and partly in the centre of the country had an extremely negative effect on early grain crops, reducing their potential," ProAgro said in a statement.
"At the same time, heavy rains were observed in the rest of the territory and led to a deterioration in the quality of wheat and barley," it added.
ProAgro said it had cut Ukraine's 2020 barley harvest outlook to 7.64 million tonnes from 8.16 million tonnes previously. But the consultancy said this weather was favourable for late grains, and raised its corn harvest outlook to 38.49 million tonnes from 37.58 million tonnes.
ProAgro said the overall grain crop could total 74.2 million tonnes, 1.1% less than in 2019.
The analysts also cut Ukraine's wheat export forecast for the 2020/21 season to 17.8 million tonnes from 18 million. It saw 2020/21 corn exports at 33 million tonnes versus 32 million tonnes a month earlier.
The economy ministry said last month the grain harvest could fall to around 68 million tonnes this year due to poor weather and damage to a significant acreage of winter grain crops. Weather forecasters however said the harvest may total 72.4 million tonnes.
Ukraine harvested a record 75.1 million tonnes of grain in 2019, including 28.3 million tonnes of wheat.
