Japan: All four major brewers see sales drop in April from a year earlier
Japan's four major brewers all posted double-digit falls in sales of beer and beer-like drinks in April from a year earlier, hit by a slump in restaurant demand due to coronavirus, their data showed on May 15.
By volume, Kirin Brewery Co. fell by 13 percent, while Sapporo Breweries Ltd. dropped 21 percent and Suntory Beer Ltd. 24 percent, as the nationwide state of emergency in April amid the pandemic prompted many restaurants to temporarily close or cut opening hours, The Mainichi reported.
In value terms, Asahi Breweries Ltd. suffered a 34 percent plunge in sales.
Meanwhile, sales of canned products were robust as more people stayed home to reduce the risk of infection, with some enjoying online drinking parties.
Lower-priced "third-category beer" made from malt alternatives or a mixture of spirits also saw an increase in demand, from consumers opting to save money amid the economic uncertainty.
As a step to support restaurants and liquor shops who are struggling due to closures, the four brewers are accepting returns of unopened beer barrels and bottles through their dealers.
"What matters most for beer is its freshness. Beer makers want customers to drink high-quality products," said a spokesperson at Asahi.
