Barley news EU: Barley production expected to increase to 62.109 mln tonnes this year

Coceral released its fourth estimate of the 2019 EU grain crop, revising the total up to 307.8 million tonnes from 304.9 mln in its last estimate.

Total barley production is forecast at 62.109 mln tonnes this year, up from 55.986 mln tonnes in 2018, thanks to improved yields of 5.02 t/ha versus 4.52 t/ha last year.

The increase will mostly come from a boosted winter barley output: spring barley production will only increase from 29.42 mln tonnes last year to 29.787 mln in 2019.

France and Germany, the EU’s largest barley producers, are both expected to see an increase in barley output this year (to 13.749 and 11.665 mln tonnes, respectively).
