Barley news EU: Winter barley harvests mostly disappointing in Europe this year

Harvest of winter barley has started in most countries of the European continent, with variable, but mostly disappointing results, H. M. Gauger GmbH said in their latest report published early in July.

France had virtually finished the winter barley harvest, calling it an average crop. The result is a 8.8 mln (basis MARS) to 9.0 mln tonnes (Agreste). Yields were average, moisture 13.5% and protein 10 -11%, calibrage from 70 to 85%.

Germany had cut about three quarters of its winter barley as of early July, the average yield per ha is given as 6.87 tonnes v. 8.68 tonnes last year. Northeast Germany’s winter barley crop is close to a disaster, some fields are only cut for feed.

Earlier crop estimates of Spanish barley, 9.5 to 10.0 mln tonnes due to cool temperatures and sufficient precipitation in winter and spring, have recently been reduced to 8.0 – 8.5 mln tonnes.

In France, a sharply reduced estimate of the wheat crop is creating concern for spring barley numbers and qualities as well.

Farmers in South and Southwest Germany are estimated to harvest and select at least 100,000 tonnes of two-row winter malting barley plus 1.15 -1.25 mln tonnes of spring malting barley, but even there doubts about yields and qualities have arisen during the last days.
