Hops news Germany: Hop acreage up by about 3% this year

According to official data, total hop acreage in Germany has risen by approx. 600 ha (+ 3%) and is around 20,000 ha now, HVG reported on June 26.

Of the total of 20,000 ha, 19,300 ha are mature hops with the rest being baby hops. The increases are distributed amongst all German hop growing regions, the experts reported.

Major developments of varieties can be summarised as follows:

• The biggest acreage increase is once again reported for variety Herkules (+ 9%), though the rise is not as high as in previous years
• Reductions for Magnum (-1 %) and Taurus (- 9 %) are relatively moderate
• In a number of flavor varieties, local sources report minor decreases in acreage
• Acreage of traditional aroma varieties is more or less stable.
